Lady Pirates score historic win in Flatfish Invitational

EUREKA — At the start of the season, Polson coach Bill Owen knew his group of young, inexperienced Lady Pirates would become good golfers – he just didn’t know how quick it would happen. On Tuesday at the Indian Springs Ranch Golf Course in Eureka, the Lady Pirates accomplished something that no Lady Pirate or Pirate team has done in Owen’s 15 years coaching at Polson by winning the two-day Flatfish Invitational. “The thing that is exciting about it is their scores are going down. They keep improving,” Owen said. “The fact that I consider them ahead of schedule. I knew they would be a good group by the end of the season, but for them to make a...

Lady Pirates cruise in conference opener

WHITEFISH — The Lady Bulldogs picked the wrong girl to pick on Thursday in Whitefish. After taking a 2-0 lead in the first game after Riley Kenney failed to return two serves, the Lady Bulldogs decided to keep serving it to her – that was a bad choice.  From that point on, Kenney&rsquo...

Pirates use three goal-line stands to clear another hurdle

For the second straight week, a young inexperienced Pirate team showed the poise of a veteran team to come away with a win against a Southwestern A foe. Friday night in Polson as the offense struggled to find its rhythm, it was the defense that stepped up for the Pirates. They started the scoring wi...

Lady Pirates humbled by Hamilton in home opener

POLSON — After keeping pace with the Lady Broncs in the first half of their season opener, the Lady Pirates stumbled out of the gates in the opening minutes of the second half and let the game slip away from them. In Polson Tuesday evening, the Lady Pirates only trailed Hamilton, who returned 10 sta...

Pirates stonewalled by Stillwater in season opener

POLSON — The Pirates couldn’t light up their scoreboard in their season opener against Stillwater Tuesday evening. Despite having the exact same shots on net as the Cougars and almost matching them shot for shot, the Pirates were handed a 2-0 loss to start the season. “We created oppo...

Lady Pirates finish starter on 6-game win streak

WHITEFISH — It took a little while for the Lady Pirates to find their groove at the Whitefish Starter Tournament, but once they did they were unstoppable. After losing two games to Eureka to start the tournament Saturday, Polson swept through their final three opponents to finish the tournament with...

Bronc busters

The untested Polson Pirates grew up in a hurry against the defending state champs. Despite having to replace 16 starters from the past season, the Pirates put together a veteran-worthy drive late in the fourth quarter, marching nearly 90 yards down the field for a touchdown to spoil the Broncs’ home...

Pirates relying on new cast for divisional title defense

POLSON — The Pirates have a lot holes to fill from last year's Northwestern A championship team and will have to have some of their new starters step up if they want to make it to their eighth playoff in the past nine years. "We're losing a ton, we lost a ton of kids, we have to replace 16 starters,...

Chiefs hoping O-line guides them to conference title

RONAN — In each year Jim Benn has coached at Ronan, the Chiefs have improved; now, entering his third year, Benn has something he has never had – a big offensive line. "I have size for the very first time," Benn said of the O-line. "And they're quick, too." The Chiefs don't announce starter...

Improved Lady Pirates take 3rd in Ronan

RONAN — In only the second week of the season, the Polson golfers' scores are moving in the right direction – they're dropping and dropping fast. At the Ronan Invitational at the Mission Mountain Golf Course Friday, all the Pirates and Lady Pirates that competed in the opening tournament eithe...
