Polson pounds out 18 hits, tops Whitefish 17-6 in conference opener

There was a brief early hiccup that proved costly, but during the rest of Friday's softball game in Whitefish the Lady Pirates were firmly in control. Polson improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in conference with a 17-6 win over the Lady Bulldogs in bone-chilling cold and wind that made the game downright miserable to close out. Polson went up 3-1 in the top of the third inning but fell behind 3-6 after Whitefish scored five runs in the bottom of the third. Pitcher Shay Duford opened the inning with a series of four walks, then Polson's defense made its one error of the game. The net result was two Whitefish runners walked in and three more scored before Polson closed out the inning, trailin...

Lady Bulldogs bite back after first loss

In the second week of the softball season, teams in the Western B-C learned not to make the Lady Bulldogs angry.  After being handed their first loss of the season Tuesday in a 5-2 error-filled defeat at the hands of rival Thompson Falls, the Lady Bulldogs responded by blowing out Drummond and Eureka...

Lady Pirates saddle state champ Lady Broncs with first loss

POLSON — It was the kind of test that veteran softball coach Larry Smith prefers. And he was happy to see his young Lady Pirate squad pass the test, though they may not have aced it. Polson kicked off the softball season with a major test against the Frenchtown Broncs last Thursday afternoon. And al...

Lady Pirates reload, look to defend their conference softball crown

POLSON — The Polson Lady Pirates may have lost a lot off last year's conference champion softball squad, but don't look for any slack in their game. Gone are both pitchers from last year, as well as a lot of power-hitting, but head coach Larry Smith has a lot of young talent returning to his lineup....

Polson girls prepare to defend divisional tennis title, boys ready to notch it up

POLSON — Spring has been kind so far to a Polson tennis squad that is itching to get back into competitive matches. The warm weather has given Polson players plenty of opportunity to work out the winter kinks and get ready for another competitive season on the courts. Last year's Lady Pirates squad ...

Pirate track gets started early at Corvallis meet

Early track season usually includes a little snow, but the tropical climate of the Bitterroot was just right last Saturday.  The Polson track team opened the season at last weekend's Gene Hughes Invitational track meet in Corvallis, enjoying partly sunny skies and 55-degree weather. The meet was host...

Second quarter blues

A trip to the state Class A basketball tournament in Hamilton last week turned out to be much shorter than Polson's Lady Pirates had hoped for. After a first round 44-40 loss to Sidney, Polson dropped out of the tournament with a 52-44 loss to Havre on Friday. But, hopefully the Lady Pirates came back wit...

Under the radar

BUTTE — The Polson Pirates saved the best for last.  Finishing second at divisionals and working through an up and down basketball season, the Pirates put it all together for one final and very successful run.  With just about everyone talking about every other team's possibilities at l...

Maidens battle into consolation championship

KALISPELL — The basketball season came to an end for the Ronan Maidens, but not without an important victory. Nobody was surprised that the Maidens weren’t in the Northwestern A Divisional title game on Saturday night. But that didn’t take anything away from the joy they felt earning a s...

Gliding to state

KALISPELL — Just one bucket short, just one stop away, just a couple of free throws from getting over the hump, the Polson Lady Pirates came oh-so-close to a divisional championship last Saturday night. Polson had the Wildkats right where they wanted them, with both posts fouled out of the game and ...
