KALISPELL — They had to work hard at it — and it took a little longer than normal — but the Polson Pirates did punch their ticket to this weekend's Class A state basketball tournament.  The Pirates vaulted into Saturday's Northwestern A Divisional championship game at Glacier High in Kalispell with a 55-37 Friday evening semifinal victory over Libby. But a Columbia Falls Wildcat team that was feeling its oats overwhelmed the Pirates in the championship 60-46 Saturday night.  Since Polson hadn't beaten third-place Ronan, a challenge game was held Monday night at Glacier. And with a day of rest and the confidence of having beaten the Chiefs twice this year, t...

Defense leads to big wins for Pirates

POLSON — The Polson Pirates kept on winning big last week, posting a 90-56 win at home over Eureka and an even bigger 59-34 conference win in Libby on Saturday. Nine Pirates scored on their home-court against Eureka Thursday, led by Kyle Bagnell with 29 and Louis Mohr with 26. Mohr just missed a tri...

Lady Pirates stop Mee, but Libby shooters step up

It was a difficult road week for Polson’s Lady Pirates. Though they won 51-39 in Eureka Thursday, the one they really wanted to win was Saturday’s game in Libby. Unfortunately, the Lady Pirates lost to the Lady Loggers 53-46 to slip back to 4-2 in conference play. On Thursday, it started slow ...

Picard leads Polson to fifth at state

Brock Picard finished up his senior wrestling season exactly the way he wanted to, earning his third state championship and leading the Polson Pirates to a fifth-place finish at last weekend's Montana State Wrestling Championships in Billings. Tested by fire

Wrestlers can be a superstitious lot, but they'll also explain that you need to go with what works for you. So, it should come as no surprise that Brock Picard stuck with what worked for him and his brother over so many years, right down to the shoes and knee pad he wore on the wrestling mat. The knee ...

Triple crown

Most high school athletes can only dream of earning a state championship. The euphoria that comes with that accomplishment must be something akin to soaring above the earth, effortlessly and with grace. To win a second championship is even more rare, somewhere in the range of lightning striking twice.&nbs...

Pirates come oh-so-close to upsetting second-ranked Wildcats

POLSON — They had 'em. The Polson Pirates had the top-ranked Columbia Falls Wildcats right where they wanted them. But a couple of costly turnovers and a couple of missed scoring opportunities down the stretch changed all that. Polson had the defending state champs and current number two team in ...

DeWit sisters prove to be pain in the paint for Lady Pirates

POLSON — It was the game of the week, the marquee matchup between the top two Northwestern A girls' basketball teams.  But it turned out to be not much of a contest. Instead, it was a lickin' that went the wrong way for Polson's Lady Pirates. The Columbia Falls Wildkats came to Polson last T...

Divisional champs

POLSON — The Polson Pirates thrilled their hometown fans with a Northwestern A Divisional Wrestling Tournament championship last Saturday. Polson won the team championship, the Pirates' first divisional championship since 2007, and had four individual weight champions. The Pirates placed 16 wrestler...

Kenney shines in the paint, leads Polson to two more wins

POLSON — It was a different way of winning for Polson's Lady Pirates, but win they did over two Bitterroot teams. Polson post Riley Kenney powered her way to double-figures in the paint on Thursday and Saturday. The 5'10" sophomore scored 18 points and hauled in seven rebounds to key Polson's 58-45 ...
