Chiefs fall to top-ranked Wildcats

RONAN — The Ronan Chiefs got a clear idea of where they want to be last weekend, but it was a tough lesson to learn. After a hard-fought 66-52 loss in Bigfork Thursday, the Chiefs returned home for a Friday night battle against Columbia Falls, the top-ranked Class A team in the state. And it didn't take long for the Wildcats to justify that ranking as they ran away with a 67-35 win. Early leads by the opponents set up both losses. On Thursday, the Vikings jumped out to a 20-6 lead and extended it to 34-14 at the half. Although Bigfork employed a half-court trap against the Chiefs, it didn't create the turnovers the Vikings hoped for. "We played pretty good, actually. They ...

Anemic stretches sink Chiefs in pair of losses

RONAN — A couple of anemic quarters led to a pair of conference losses for the Ronan Chiefs last week.  Ronan dropped a 54-45 game at home to Polson Tuesday, then lost 55-39 in Libby on Saturday. Both losses were keyed by offensive lapses that let the other team make crucial runs. Polson use...

Maidens drop pair of Northwestern A games

LIBBY — The Maidens failed to capitalize on any momentum from their first win of the season and dropped a pair of conference games last week. The Ronan Maidens couldn’t match up with the athleticism of the Lady Pirates and fell to Polson 65-26 at home Tuesday. Saturday it was the size of the L...

Four Chiefs go undefeated at Western Montana Duals

RONAN — The Chiefs capped a busy weekend of wrestling with a 42-39 dual victory over Libby Saturday evening to claim fifth place in the Western Montana Duals. Ronan hosted the two-day tournament in the Ronan Event Center, which kept six mats full of wrestling duals, including a fair amount of exhibitio...

Chiefs still searching for consistent offense

WHITEFISH — It wasn't the kind of return from the Christmas break the Ronan Chiefs wanted as they lost badly in Whitefish last Saturday. The Chiefs fell behind quickly 17-4 in the first quarter and had to try to scramble the rest of the night. But the Bulldogs didn't let them get very far, making an...

Runners go the distance in memory of Linda Decker

RONAN — So many circles, so little time. A group of dedicated runners decided to end the year by running a whole bunch of circles — 288 of them, actually.  The 13 runners teamed up in a marathon relay at the Ronan Middle School running track to raise more than $1,000 that will benefit ...

You would have thought they had done it too many times to count. With their teammate at the line with less than a second to play and the Maidens holding on to a 42-32 lead over Whitefish at home Saturday night, Alice Van Gunten, Nina Orozco and Taylor Lynch stood stoically at the center of the court. Afte...
