Young Pirates key Polson in 46-39 wrestling dual win over Ronan

POLSON — The Polson won a pin-fest last Saturday night over valley-rival Ronan, edging the Chiefs 46-39 in a hard-fought wrestling dual. But it didn't start out all that well for the Pirates.  The dual started at 130 pounds and Ronan wrestlers rattled off six straight match wins, five of them by pin. "They had a pretty good draw to start at 130 and they really got rolling. It was a train wreck for a while ... I couldn't wait for Brock (Picard's) match to stop the bleeding," Polson head coach Bob Owen said. Picard won the 171-pound match by pin over Tyler Wheeler to stop Ronan's run. Though the Chiefs' Toby Cheff won the 189 match by pin, Polson rebounded by winning th...

Warriors place 5th at Mission Mountain Classic

ST. IGNATIUS — The Warriors worked out the kinks from a long Christmas break at the Mission Mountain Classic in St. Ignatius Saturday. Warrior freshman Austin Rubel was the highest finisher for Arlee, finishing in second place in the 105-pound class, after being pinned by Frenchtown’s Glenn He...

Chiefs still searching for consistent offense

WHITEFISH — It wasn't the kind of return from the Christmas break the Ronan Chiefs wanted as they lost badly in Whitefish last Saturday. The Chiefs fell behind quickly 17-4 in the first quarter and had to try to scramble the rest of the night. But the Bulldogs didn't let them get very far, making an...

Pirates win shootout over Yellowjackets 75-70

STEVENSVILLE — There were a lot of sore necks in the stands Saturday night after the Polson Pirates came down to the Bitterroot to take on the Stevensville Yellowjackets. Fans had to keep their head on a swivel all night as two run-and-gun basketball teams did just that for 32 minutes of play. Stevi...

Warriors trounce Bobcats to remain undefeated

ARLEE — The Warriors showed no rust from a long layoff, easily taking care of the Superior Bobcats 80-40 at home Saturday in their first game back from the Christmas break. Using their pressure defense to fuel their fast break, the Warriors jumped out to a 19-9 first quarter lead and never looked ba...

Runners go the distance in memory of Linda Decker

RONAN — So many circles, so little time. A group of dedicated runners decided to end the year by running a whole bunch of circles — 288 of them, actually.  The 13 runners teamed up in a marathon relay at the Ronan Middle School running track to raise more than $1,000 that will benefit ...

Lady Pirates out of sync in 52-47 loss at Stevi

STEVENSVILLE — The Christmas break took its toll on Polson's Lady Pirate basketball team and it showed in a close-but-no-cigar 52-47 in Stevensville Saturday afternoon. Just when they needed it most, the Lady Pirates were missing forward Nicole Davey, who was not yet back from visiting family, and m...

Sluggish 3rd quarter sinks Scarlet in Superior

SUPERIOR — The Scarlets couldn’t overcome a disastrous third quarter in a 46-30 loss to the Lady Bobcats in Superior Saturday. In their first game back from the Christmas break, the Scarlets took a 17-16 lead into the second half, but only connected on one field goal in the third quarter and w...

Snapped

You would have thought they had done it too many times to count. With their teammate at the line with less than a second to play and the Maidens holding on to a 42-32 lead over Whitefish at home Saturday night, Alice Van Gunten, Nina Orozco and Taylor Lynch stood stoically at the center of the court. Afte...
