Daines not representing Montana values

Editor,
I hesitate to use the word sleezy, but there’s no other way to describe Rep. Steve Daines’ recent use of military veterans as props in what is clearly a phony campaign flyer (Missoulian, Aug. 16). What makes it insidious is not just his own failure to serve in the military (instead amassing personal wealth in foreign markets), but also his prior votes to cut funding for veteran programs. Maybe hypocrite is a better word.
One sees similar behavior when he voted for the North Fork Preservation Act, extolling his supposedly environmental-friendly side, only to learn later he voted for it knowing all along his Tea-Party colleague from Pennsylvania in the Senate was going to kill the Act with his vote – which he did. This same Tea-Partly colleague then contributed thousands of dollars to Daines’s current Senate campaign. Then there were the TV blurbs showing Daines visiting one of the biggest (read richest) GOP lobbyist offices in Washington DC at the same time he was voting to cut off salaries and benefits to hundreds of government workers in Montana.
Then there are the votes to cut or eliminate funding for women’s reproductive health benefits in Montana.
This man does not represent the Montana values I grew up with. Amanda Curtis, his Democratic opponent, may or may not make a good Senator, but she does not exhibit the deceptive and hypocritical behavior of Steve Daines. We can do better – a lot better than Steve Daines as our Senator.
