Editor,

The Mission and Flathead Valleys are privileged to have author Elaine Willman come to visit. She will be in the area from Sept. 7 to 19. Please try to hear her speak. She welcomes questions from the public.

Ms. Willman has extensive knowledge about Federal Indian Policy, land use status, dual-jurisdiction and Constitutional conflicts that impact the rights and lives of tribal members as well as all citizens. She is pursuing a doctoral degree in Federal Indian Policy and is of Cherokee ancestry.

Having served as administrator, community and economic development director, Ms. Willman has blended her local land use and strategic planning expertise with federal Indian policy to inform and engage counties, towns and citizens that are co-located within federally recognized Indian reservations.

Her book “Going to Pieces - the Dismantling of the United States of America” reports the first person experiences of tribal and non-tribal citizens residing on 17 Indian reservations from Washington State to New York State.

I urge proponents and opponents of the proposed compact, tribal members, and all of you who still “just don’t know” to come and listen and learn. We have listened to Ms. Melissa Hornbeck (attorney for the State of Montana) several times; come get a new view of how it is.

Please be open-minded, come meet Elaine Willman, ask questions, listen and learn. She will speak at Ronan Community Center at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9.

She will also be speaking at the Hilton Garden Inn in Kalispell on Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Her book will be available for purchase and signing at all appearances.
