Editor,
The annual Town Pump matching-grant fundraiser for the Polson food pantry, that began in September and continues through November, constitutes the major fund drive for the coming year. The Town Pump matches donations up to $8,000. These funds will be used to purchase healthful, nutritious food for needy individuals and families in Polson and the Polson area, as well as keep the lights and heat on.
In 2009, the Polson Loaves & Fish Pantry opened a beautiful new building thanks to the many generous businesses and individuals who donated materials or time in large and small ways to acquire the property and renovate the building.
The acquisition of the new, larger building was fortuitous in view of the increased need since the Great Recession of 2008. In spite of the official declaration that the recession ended in 2009, the number of people served by the Pantry increased from 2,000 in FY2007 to more than 15,000 in FY2013; and the food distributed increased from 100,000 to more than 200,000 pounds per year over the same period.
People needing food assistance include many of our friends and neighbors. They include single parents, families and individuals out of work or with low paying jobs, the elderly living on minimum social security payments, and disabled people of all ages who are unable to earn a living wage.
The Polson Loaves & Fish Pantry is a tax-exempt 501(3) organization. Donors can deduct contributions to the Pantry for federal estate and gift tax purposes. The Pantry is entirely operated by volunteers.
Make donations in person or by mail to Polson Town Pump, 50667 US Hwy 93, Polson, MT, 59860; by mail to the Polson Loaves & Fish Pantry, 904 1st Street East, Polson, MT, 59860; or stop in at the Pantry in person for a tour of our wonderful community facility.
As the food pantry manager, I am asking you to please donate during this fund raising period. Thank you.
