POLSON — The Sting got off to a great start in the Stillwater Christian School annual Cougar Classic opening season soccer tournament. On Friday, the boys beat Helena Christian School by a 2-1 margin with a goal in the final minutes of the game.

This is the same Helena Christian School team that beat us three times last year.

It was a well-rounded game with every player making a contribution to some degree.

Our experienced upper classmen showed an eager willingness to distribute the ball among all of their teammates, realizing that this is a team game and we are going to need every player to develop as the season transpires.

It was great to see the players who were younger last year, such as Jesse and Micah Doty, take on leading roles as they saw much more playing time compared to last season. We lost several key players from last year’s squad so the youngsters’ roles will increase significantly this season.

They have done their time and showed in this game that they are ready to take on team leadership.

Nick and Jake Windauer were responsible for all three goals. Brenden and Dayton Conrad and Conner Murphy furiously defended our goal as we tried to give new Sting addition Jediah Tromp experience at the goalie position. Time and time again they fended off offensive attacks of several talented Helena strikers.

Coach Conrad said he was pleased with the overall performance and looked forward to opportunities for improvement.

On Saturday, the Mission Valley Christian Academy boys’ team hosted Foothills Christian School.

Another very good performance was turned in by our squad, ultimately ending in a 1-1 tie.

Foothills scored first, taking their lead into the first half. We tied the score in the second half with a penalty kick by Nick Windauer.

The game was hard fought throughout.

In an effort to continue to get our premier goalie, Jake Windauer, into the field of play as well as develop his predecessor, we gave Windauer’s teammates playing time at the goalie position.

In this game, Dayton Conrad took a turn and turned in an excellent performance. Indeed we may have found our goalie of the future as Dayton and the Sting defenders (notably Jesse Doty, Brenden Conrad and Conner Murphy) held the Foothills boys scoreless in the second half.
