Editor,

I wanted to express my dismay with American mainstream media for their lack of coverage over the vote last week (Sept. 11) in the Senate to begin the process of amending our Constitution to repeal Citizens United. Although the Amendment had support from the majority of senators, it failed to move on due to filibuster. Citizens United affects every single American citizen that wishes for their voice to be heard in our great democracy. The Citizens United ruling by the Supreme Court in 2010 effectively gave corporations the right to spend unlimited and secret amounts of money in elections via Super Political Action Committees. These Super PACs raise unlimited funds from very wealthy individuals, corporations, unions and other groups.

While Montanans voted in 2012 that Citizens United should be overturned with a Constitutional Amendment, our voices have yet to be heeded and we must work even harder to get big money out of our elections. Until Citizens United is overturned, we must seek true facts about particular candidates and always question paid TV, radio, and print advertising. All we have left as the little guy is the political process and right now that process is corrupt with big money.

I also wanted to recognize Senator Jon Tester and his fight to overturn Citizens United. I am proud to have him in Washington fighting for Montanans. He says, “We must put regular people and their ideas back in charge of our elections … big money interests and defenders of Citizens United are distorting the First Amendment for their own gain. Getting big money out of our elections will improve how we elect leaders and govern for all Americans.”

I agree, do you?
