Editor,
America is in the position that other great economic powers have found themselves in the past. A wide and increasing gap between rich and poor, a tremendous and increasing debt burden, and as the punitive world’s policeman, an overextension globally, which of course contributes to the exacerbating effect of the first two observations. It is a noble and even sacred ambition to aspire, as still the world’s only real superpower, towards a vigorous defense of democratic tendencies abroad, as long as we do not in the process inadvertently, seriously hamper or destroy democracy here at home.
