Editor,

On Nov. 4, I plan to cast my vote for John Lewis for Montana’s only seat in the U.S House of Representative and Amanda Curtis for United States Senate. I am excited that this will be my first real election to be voting in, and I am happy to finally vote for a women for political office. It is true to say that congress is made up mostly of old white men, I think Congress should look more like America, and that should include more women. In order to move forward as a nation, it will be the young people of my generation who lead the way to a better tomorrow. Through this summer, I have been tirelessly making phone calls and canvassing for the two candidates day in an day out as a Fellow with the Montana Democratic Party. Montana now has a chance to elect truly qualified candidates to represent working class families of Montana in Washington. Montanan’s like to see their candidates funded by Montanans rather than out of state organizations who are more interested in selling off our public lands to out of state private businesses. I just find it appalling that that would even be up for debate. Our public lands are so important for recreating, hunting and fishing. Texas has 3 percent public ownership of their state and Montana has 35 percent; we have much more access to our public lands than they do. I like that. Despite her lack of money or time, I believe Amanda Curtis can and will win because she represents real Montanans. She is one of us. The U.S. Senate needs two teacher/legislators from Montana and someone who knows how most of us live each day. I believe that on Nov. 4 we’ll send her opponent packing.
