Editor,

On Nov. 4, voters in Lake and Sanders County will choose a district court judge. Their choice should be Mark Russell.

Mark does not have the deep pockets to run a high-profile campaign. However, the realities of campaigning on a small budget demonstrate the very qualities that will make him an excellent judge: A willingness to work hard, dedication to serving, and a genuine interest in—and concern for—the people of these counties.

Mark does have the recommendation of the Republican Party. Although this is a nonpartisan race, the party apparently realizes his traditional values of accountability for criminals and justice for victims align with theirs.

I find it reassuring that Mark does not have a list of local trial lawyers endorsing him.

Mark will be an impartial and knowledgeable judge. He cares greatly about all the people in the 20th Judicial District. He will conduct court proceedings professionally and courteously.

When District Court Judge C.B. McNeil retired last fall, Mark was one of three finalists considered for appointment to complete McNeil’s term. He had tremendous community support, as shown by the numerous letters written to the selection committee on his behalf. At that time, Montana Governor Steve Bullock, a Democrat, was allowed to make his choice. Now the people of Lake and Sanders Counties have the opportunity to choose a judge who represents our values.

Mark Russell is that choice.
