Editor,

The name Mark Russell, in Lake and Sanders Counties, has meant many things. There was Mark Russell, Chief Deputy Lake County Attorney, Mark Russell, Hot Springs City Attorney, baseball coach, school board member - in my mind the list goes on and on. But only one title fits: Mark Russell, dad.

Growing up, my dad was a hero. I still see my father as the strongest man I know, one with great character. I want to share this, because a peek into who “Mark Russell, Sharidan’s Dad” is may also reveal who “Mark Russell, District Court Judge” will be.

I was six when my dad got his job as an attorney for Lake County and moved us to Montana. He brought us here, to the state he loves, to serve the public here. That is a quality I have come to respect more as an adult. I can’t remember a time my dad wasn’t doing something in the community. I remember when he told me that his dream was once to be President of the United States, and that dream is why he prioritized public service. It’s a profound statement he made, that his goal is always to serve.

Furthermore, my father is incredibly honest. There were times when that quality led to awkward conversations. However, I admire the man for being so straightforward; and he was often right. My dad’s experiences as a prosecutor have given him certain qualities. Among them are brevity, fairness, and the ability to handle serious situations. He has seen ugly things as a prosecutor, but they haven’t made him bitter as a father. Instead, it ignited his passion to make improvements, and to pass on to his children good moral character.

It’s my turn to support my father the way he always supported me. Law and public service are his passions, and he’s good at it. His strength of character, analytical mind, capacity to work with others and passion make him ready to serve Lake and Sanders Counties as District Court Judge. Mark Russell, Sharidan’s Dad is ready to become Mark Russell, District Court Judge.
