Editor,

This is in rebuttal to a letter written about Judge James Manley.

I am a lawyer in Missoula who often appears in Judge Manley’s court. As a reader of the Leader, I noticed a letter to the editor the other day from Cesar Hernandez. Cesar was complaining about Judge Manley. I was an attorney on that case. Cesar was represented by his own son, attorney Shiloh Hernandez. In open court, Shiloh recited the terms of an agreement that he had helped Cesar negotiate with some neighbors to resolve a long-running easement dispute. Cesar was present in court, and voiced no objection to Shiloh’s statements.

Six weeks later, however, Cesar fired his own son, and wrote a letter to Judge Manley attempting to renege on the agreement. But Judge Manley was not fooled. He held Cesar to his original promise, and enforced the agreement just as Shiloh had stated it. This was the right result — and exactly what all the parties had honorably bargained for in working-out a difficult matter without need for a trial.

Judge Manley is a good man and a fair judge. He holds people to their word. I hope the folks in Sanders and Lake County vote to retain him.
