RONAN – Ronan city councilmembers said Nov. 18 that they were thankful to finally have a new police chief to oversee the hiring process of officers.

The city council faced criticism from the public and police commissioners in the past year that resulted in a new set of hiring procedures. Now Police Chief Ken Weaver is handling the hiring, and the process of finding new officers is progressing without as much fuss.

“We are two officers down,” Weaver said. “We sent out a recruitment on Job Service back in October. We picked up three applications from that and pooled them with the applications we’ve gotten in the past year, 40. We whittled that down to 17. Then I met with the (police) commission and Public Safety Board and we now have eight applications that we are going to look into further and continue with our hiring process.”

Weaver said hiring new officers was at the top of his list of things to get done.

Councilmembers said they were happy to see the hiring process moving forward so quickly.

“We’re glad he’s here,” Councilmember Chris Adler said.
