The other day as I was in the middle of another emotional upset about how things are going politically here at home and with all the violence in our world, my Wisconsin brother’s email popped up on the computer. It was an account about Leo Buscaglia when he was asked to be a judge in a contest to find the most caring child. I perked up my eyes, ears and heart. I used to listen to Leo years ago.
Leo Buscaglia was known as “Dr. Love.” He was a professor of special education at the University of Southern California. As an author and lecturer, his messages back in the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s, were legendary in teaching how to live life to the fullest. This involved gaining an understanding of just how practical love really can be in our lives if we but learn to relax and allow our God-given inner wisdom to come forth in our thoughts, words and actions.
I knew I was in for a treat. I knew that somehow, whatever this account and story, I was going to be given a message that could change my entire emotional condition immediately, for the day and possibly for my lifetime. That’s how powerful true accounts of love can be, and Dr. Love proved it over and over with so many people over the years.
Here’s the story of the contest to find the most caring child:
The winner was a 4-year-old child, whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman, who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman’s yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his mother asked him what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy just said, “Nothing, I just helped him cry.”
Love is the answer regardless of how it is packaged, it seems to me.
