Valentine’s Day, skiing and … golf? When you think of February, golf is usually not a subject that is on your mind. However this year, Polson golfers get to enjoy an early season to swing those clubs. Polson Bay Golf Course officially opened on Friday, Feb. 13. This is the earliest it has been open with permanent greens and the use of carts. Yet Polson does enjoy one of the longest playing seasons in all of Montana, and has in some years been able to offer some sort of play each month of the year.

Wondering how the course looks right now? I have heard from golfers that it looks terrific. And our Course Maintenance Superintendent Pat Nowlen said, “The greens are the best they have ever looked coming out of winter. I anticipate fantastic playing conditions for the 2015 season.”

There are a lot of exciting events and activities planned at the golf course in the upcoming months. In addition to the tournaments that are hosted each year — Lake City Open, CASA Scramble, Bobcat Scramble, and many others — there will also be live music offered again this year. Planning is still in the works for the entertainment schedule, but if you didn’t make it out last year it is something you should try to attend this summer. It’s very fun to visit with other friends and community members while listening to our local talent, with the view of the course and Mission Mountains in the background. It’s really an experience that is hard to beat.

We are so fortunate here in Polson that the managers at the course have a strong focus on our youth. There are many opportunities for young people to get involved, learn the sport and participate in no-cost or low-cost programs. The annual Polson Junior Golf Camp is free to children entering first through eighth grade and is set to start on June 16. The week ends with a Pitch, Putt and Drive Contest and a potluck barbecue on June 20. Mission Valley Elks also sponsors an Advanced Golf Camp geared for kids that are a little more experienced. This event is on July 29 and 30, and has a low cost of only $20 per student due to the support of our local Elks Club. And a new program this year is the PGA Junior League. This league is available for kids ages 13 and under and will provide an opportunity for kids to get involved in the game and play with other kids from around the area.

Adults can also take advantage of private lessons that are available with our talented golf pros to help improve your game.

Polson Bay Golf Course is operated by Roger Wallace with the assistance of Cameron Milton. These two guys do a tremendous job at providing a great experience at our course, and representing our community in the golf industry in the region, state, and nationally. In the last year, both Roger and Cameron received awards for their contributions in golf. We should all be very proud to have these two dedicated men serving our golf community.

Overall, it looks like we are set for a wonderful year at the golf course.

“The 2015 golf season is off to a fantastic start,” Cameron said. “2015 looks to be a great year at Polson Bay Golf Course with activities for the whole family including music, tournaments, youth and adult player development programs, and the best conditioned golf course in Western Montana. Polson Bay Golf Course is the epitome of public golf; we strive to make every guest feel special and to have a multitude of programs for new players and the season pass holder.”

To stay in tune with what is going on at the course or find out more about the programs, you can follow the Facebook page, sign up for the newsletter, visit the website, or call the pro shop at (406) 883-8230.

The restaurant is set to open April 1, and I would like to invite everyone out to celebrate the start of the season on Thursday, April 2 at 5:30 p.m. Buy one drink then get one free on the mayor. Hope to see you there.
