Arlee Warriors

BUTTE – After a flawless regular season and District tourney, the Warriors faced heartbreak for the first time this year as they took their first loss and ended up in second place at Divisonals in Butte last weekend.

The good news: the Warriors will head to Billings March 12-15 for some State action, bypassing the challenge game because they beat third-placed Twin Bridges in Divisional play.

Game one at Divisionals on Thursday pitted the Warriors against Shields Valley, a third place team from District 11/12-C. A slight underscore in the first quarter of play must have rallied the Warriors to battle as they dominated the Rebels in the next three to pick up the first round victory, 77-58.

Tyler Tanner led the pack of nine Warriors who scored, logging 21 in the book while Patrick BigSam chipped in 15.

Day two saw the Warriors take on Twin Bridges in the semis with both teams vying for a spot in the Championship show.

An even-paced first half along with an explosive second secured the Warriors a chance to battle for a Divisional title and an invite to State as the Warriors rolled over Twin Bridges 78-66.

Four Warriors posted double digits on the board as Tanner once again took the lead with 20. Phillip Malatare added 16, BigSam netted 14 and Bradley Brazill cleaned up with 12.

Saturday the Warriors geared up to take on the challenge of continuing their winning streak through a Divisional gold. However, Manhattan Christian had their own agenda as the Warriors fell to the Eagles, 76-82.

Though the two teams remained relatively close through the first half of play, a 31-point third quarter frenzy on the Eagles part left the Warriors in a pained game of catch up and they never quite recovered.

Despite the loss, five Warriors tossed up double digits on the board led by Tanner’s 19. BigSam was close behind with 16 while Justis Haynes added 14, Malatare finished with 11 and Isaac Desjarlais chipped in 10.

Arlee Scarlets

BUTTE – A fourth place finish ended the Scarlets’ Divisional run and season’s reign after taking it 2-2 in Butte last weekend.

The Scarlets battled a tough 30-40 loss against Gardiner in game one of the Western C Divisional Tournament, pushing the Scarlets into the consolation bracket right from the start.

With both teams starting off with a slow first half, Arlee fell behind in the second as they underscored their opponents by seven.

With only five Scarlets posting points on the scoreboard, Carly Hergett and Becca Whitesell combined for 23 of them. Hergett tossed in a game high 13 and Whitesell added 10.

Friday the Scarlets came back on a mission to dominate the world, and that they did as they pulverized Darby 59-70.

Forty-four points went up for the Scarlets before the half time buzzer blew and after the break Arlee continued their scoring frenzy.

Violet Pablo and Hergett led the attack with Pablo netting 24 and Hergett helping out with 21.

A game away from competing for third, the Scarlets secured their spot into the consolation final after rolling over Seeley-Swan, 45-29.

After gripping the early lead in the first, the Scarlets held on tight in the paced contest.

Bryndle Goyins outscored both teams at the hoop, netting 16, and Hergett tossed in 12.

At the Consolation final, the Scarlets faced tough competition while sharing the court with Harrison-Willow Creek.

With just a couple of points separating the two teams, a fourth quarter point run by Harrison-Willow Creek left the Scarlets to return home with a 39-47 loss and fourth place finish, ending the Scarlets’ 18-6 season.

Whitesell and Hergett each logged 11 in the season-ender.

All together the Scarlets were 4-2 in the postseason.

Charlo Vikings

POLSON – After a close first three quarters, the Vikings succumbed to a fourth frame opponent rally in the loser-out barnburner, ending Charlo’s enduring season.

Though the Vikings took a short one point advantage going into the fourth, they had trouble holding on, coming out of the season ender 53-58 against 13-C’s third placed Drummond.

The Delaney duo combined to take care of most of Charlo’s business on the floor, scoring 34 of the Vikings 53. Michael netted a team high 18 and Dalton posted 16.

The Vikings will finish with an 11-12 overall record, 3-2 in postseason play.

Charlo Lady Vikings

BUTTE – After tripping up at Districts two weekends ago, the Lady Vikings continued their run of bad luck after getting the broom last week at the Western C Divisional Tournament.

Opening up the tourney bright and early Thursday, the Lady Vikings couldn’t keep up with Twin Bridges’ scoring power at the net, leaving the Lady Vikings to take a first round hit falling 30-59 to the Lady Falcons.

Lady Viking Shayna Nagy scored 14 in the upset with all other Charlo scorers failing to net more than five.

In the loser-out, day-two contest against Harrison-Willow Creek, the Lady Vikings played a tight second half but it wasn’t enough to give Charlo another round of play. The Lady Vikings will return home with the 32-37 knockout loss.

Nagy once again posted Charlo’s top numbers netting 10 for her team. Sienna Brown and Skyler Frame each scored seven apiece.

The Lady Vikings will finish their season with an overall record of 18-5, a second place in District competition and a 2-3 postseason run.

Polson Pirates

WHITEFISH – The Pirates showed they would not go out without a bang in last weekend’s Divisional Tournament as Polson made it all the way to the Championship game and came home in second place with an invite for a play-in game for the State tourney.

Entering into the semis with a bye, game one on Friday proved to be eventful for the Pirates. A four point difference is all it took to launch the Pirates into the Championship game after taking down Whitefish 44-40.

The Pirates took the lead early on and kept a steady scoring pace going until the final buzzer, leaving the Bulldogs to nip the Pirates heels along the way.

Pirates Matthew Rensvold and Tanner Wilson had high-five performances with Wilson tallying up 16 points and Rensvold adding 15.

Saturday the Pirates faced number-one seeded Columbia Falls in the championship game. After a tied first frame, the Pirates struggled to find the hoop in the second, underscoring the Wildcats by 15 and forcing the Pirates to work from behind.

Though a rally gave the Pirates a short lift in the fourth, they ultimately fell to the Wildcats 48-62, finishing with Divisional silver as the second place team.

Rensvold, Wilson and Andrew Curley worked together to post 37 of the Pirates 48 points. Rensvold led with 14, Curley chipped in 12 and Wilson added 11.

A challenge game was played against Frenchtown in Whitefish Monday, after the Valley Journal went to press, to determine whether the Pirates would make the trip to Bozeman for State competition March 12–14. For updates, see www.valleyjournal.net

Polson Lady Pirates

WHITEFISH - The Lady Pirates had a tough showing at the Northwestern A Divisional tourney, going two and out in the double elimination competition.

On Friday the Lady Pirates fell by only four points in game one against Whitefish, tumbling them down to the consolation bracket.

After staying on top for most of the game, a single-digit fourth quarter damaged the Lady Pirates chance as they fell to the Lady Bulldogs, 44-48.

Lady Pirates Marlee Congdon and Brenna Clark each posted nine points for Polson while Lauren Lefthand was right behind with eight.

On the consolation side of the bracket Saturday the Lady Pirates fought until the end after a trip into overtime, but fell 34-39 to Libby, ending the Lady Pirates’ season.

While the Lady Pirates started slow in the first half of play, a strong second evened up the score, forcing OT court time. Unfortunately for the Lady Pirates, a five-point shortage ended their Divisional run.

Nichole Lake led both teams at the net, scoring 12 points, and Congdon chipped in nine.

The Lady Pirates will finish up their season with a 2-18 record.

Ronan Chiefs

KALISPELL – The Chiefs made it to game three before falling at the Western B Divisional tournament in Kalispell. After some rumble and some tumble, the Chiefs will hang their jerseys until next year’s return to the court.

Wednesday the Chiefs took on Bigfork resulting in a first round 60-85 loss against the Vikings. After a 10-point deficit in the first quarter of play, the Chiefs only won a single quarter topping out at two points ahead in the third.

Chief Cedric Earthboy scored the most for the Chiefs after posting 19 points while Colton McCrea chipped in 14. Rhett Duffey also added double digs with 10.

Friday’s loser out game two played out a little better for the Chiefs as they overcame the Eureka Lions to grab the 54-51 win.

Though the Chiefs fell behind after the third frame, a fourth quarter super rally brought the Chiefs back to life as they outscored their opponents by six to secure the victory.

Jeremiah North Piegan high scored his team, putting 14 on the board, and Earthboy added 11.

In another loser out contest on Saturday the Chiefs challenged Deer Lodge for a chance to hop into the consolation game to play for third.

While looking at a 32-32 tie going into the half time break, the Chiefs lagged behind the final two quarters, falling to the Wardens 56-63.

Earthboy led his team in scoring netting 19 and North Piegan tossed in 17.

Ronan Maidens

KALISPELL – A Divisional bronze will return home with the Maidens as they finish off their exciting season taking third at the Western B Divisional tournament in Kalispell this last week. Though the Maidens put up a fight, an unfortunate second round loss knocked the Maidens out of contention for gold, forcing Ronan to battle it out through the back door to gain the third place consolation prize.

In game one on Wednesday the Maidens blew past Troy, 57-45. Out of the gate the Maidens claimed a lead and though the Lady Trojans posted a winning third frame, the Maidens kept on pace to claim the win.

Maiden sophomore Alicia Camel high scored, tossing in 24 points, two-thirds of that logged in the second half.

Joining Camel in the double-digit club was Kendra Starkel with 14 and Micalann McCrea with 10.

Thursday things took a turn for the Maidens as they fell to Plains in a close-but-no-prize 40-42 sinker.

No individual stats or other information were reported.

On the consolation side of the bracket, the Maidens took the Thompson Falls Lady Blue Hawks into overtime on Friday, snatching up the 65-61 loser-out win and giving the Maidens a ticket into the consolation final. A fourth-quarter run by the Maidens tied up the contest and OT proved to be on the Maidens side, but not without charging up a foul-fest in its wake. A combined 53 fouls plagued both teams with 76 free throws shot between the two.

Lee and Alicia Camel matched each other’s 18 points to high score for the Maidens and McCrea chipped in 12.

In the Consolation final game played later in the evening Friday night, the Maidens came back to finish out their season with a 53-39 victory against Deer Lodge.

After falling behind in the first quarter, the Maidens kicked it into overdrive, outscoring the Lady Wardens in every frame to follow, sending the Maidens home with their third place prize.

Maiden Alicia Camel led all scorers from both sides of the court tossing in 18 and Aspen Jore logged 13.

The Maidens retire their season with a 19-5 overall record and 5-1 for the postseason.
