The Nest earns grant from Montana Community Foundation

ST. IGNATIUS — The check was supposed to be for $100,000.
But when it was presented to Jenifer Blumberg, executive director of The Nest, the board of directors and advisors, the amount line read $325,000. They were gobsmacked.
“Are you serious?” Blumberg asked.
Then there were thanks, hugs and tears all around.
The money was a grant from the Montana Community Foundation, located in Helena. The donors were anonymous, but Mary Rutherford, chief executive officer and president, said, “you made the donors understand the need.”
The grant will allow Blumberg and her hardworking, talented crew to provide transitional housing for young pregnant and parenting women who are fleeing abusive situations. The check was presented at a location found by Blumberg. It’s the ideal sight for The Nest, with seven bedrooms, lots of bathrooms, a large garden, fruit trees, a lawn and a deck.
The young women will receive counseling, learn job skills and further their education.
“Every cause needs a voice to tell their story. Not every voice is doing what you do,” Rutherford told Blumberg. “There are lots of families in Montana who care deeply about people. This board enables those people to remain anonymous.”
