DIXON — A half-dozen professionally trained search and rescue teams were searching near North Valley Creek Road on Wednesday morning for a man who went missing over the weekend.

Troy Akers, 20, was traveling from Missoula with three others on Sunday night when the vehicle became stranded near Dixon.

Sanders County Sheriff Tom Rummel said his deputies and Two Bear Helicopter were able to recover three people after they received a call of people lost in the area. The search continued into the morning hours when additional personnel were called out to help.

By Wednesday morning, 25 searchers from Sanders County Search and Rescue, Flathead Search and Rescue, North Valley Search and Rescue, Lincoln County Search and Rescue, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Fish and Game, Missoula Search and Rescue, a canine unit, and the United States Border Patrol were on the scene.

Sheriff Rummel said the terrain is very rough and that the public can help by staying out of the way of the search teams. Public search teams are not allowed to join the search because authorities feared they might get injured.

“I don’t want anybody getting hurt,” Rummel said.

The searchers on the scene include trained rope and rappelling teams.
