Kids create posters to fight tobacco, drug use

POLSON — A large yellow bird, softballs, basketballs, wallets and the earth all exhorted kids not to smoke.
The items were on posters created for Tar Wars, a tobacco free education program for fourth and fifth graders. Tar Wars is part of a Montana-wide effort to stop kids from beginning to smoke and from using smokeless tobacco.
Dennis Johnson, Montana Tobacco Use Prevention Program, said Polson Middle School students submitted approximately 100 pieces of art for the anti-tobacco poster with a positive message contest.
Johnson’s REAct Against Corporate Tobacco group from Polson High School judged the posters and put them into first, second and third place categories, and then selected the four best posters. Kids whose posters placed received gift cards from local businesses for goodies such as ice cream cones or popcorn.
The kids said they had class time to make posters, so they could do a really good job.
