RONAN – Car enthusiasts agree that Father’s Day is usually the busiest day for car shows in Montana, Idaho, and Washington, but those who crowded around Les Schwab parking lot in Ronan on Saturday are pretty inclined to say that the town’s free entry, long-standing mid-June car show is as good or better than any of the others held on the same day.

This year’s lineup brought rigs from as far away as Whitefish, with 54 entries spiffing up for the event.

“It’s a good car show,” Jim Sheumaker said of why he brought his ’68 Nova to the show. “It’s something to do, and not stay home and work.”

Don Cisney of Les Schwab said he’s been coming to the show for years, as have many others.

‘We’ve got folks from kids all the way up to 80 years old,” Cisney said. “There is a lot of variety. It gives people an excuse to drive their toys and have some fun … It is good will for the people and kind of a customer appreciation day.”

Shelley Cordis of Ronan said she hopes more young folks will participate in the shows. She and her husband Larry attended more than a dozen shows last summer, but the couple of 40-somethings are usually the youngest folks around.

Cordis has started a Facebook page called Montana Car Shows and Cruises that curates all Montana Car Shows in one place so people in the community can be up-to-date. It’s a fun group of people to hang out with, Cordis said.

“We’re trying to get more young people. Unless your family was involved, it can be kind of hard to get into it,” Cordis said. “But if you are interested in cars, we don’t care what your car looks like. We don’t care if you push it here. You might not win a huge trophy, but if it’s a labor of love, like most of these guys who appreciate cars, you’ll enjoy it.”
