Editor,

These days our kids are exposed to such a wide variety of significant life choices. Are we mentoring our kids and helping them choose and develop healthy life styles? Are we answering our kids many loud cries for help?

The most excellent article in the June 24 issue of the Valley Journal by Berl Tiskus entitled: “Judge, deputy county attorney discuss drug problem, solutions” gives  a compelling account. It should be read and contemplated by everyone in this valley.

We have a golden opportunity, right now, to create a “Mission Valley Youth Center.” The building at 401 Main St. in Polson could be the place. It is presently home to the “Montana Co-op” run by president Jason Moore. Within this food co-op Jason has established the “Kids Co-op” (for youth up to age 25), a business division of Montana Co-op. Jason’s vision is very focused on our youth population; involving youth, training youth and providing very self-empowering programs and projects. The “Kids Co-op” would coordinate well with the Mission Valley Youth Center mission for motivating and empowering our youth.

Mission Valley Youth Center is to be a very safe and well structured environment. There is to be cohesion, youth motivated discipline, a joyful atmosphere, full and effective agreements on drugs and alcohol, youths helping youths and adult supervision throughout.

The need is great for well organized and dynamic support programs for our youth population that extend beyond the schools. Mission Valley Youth Center would work closely with our schools and other youth organizations. The youth center would become an important attraction throughout Mission Valley.

This is obviously going to take much work, money, personnel and very keen administrative skills. This will involve adult role modeling and mentoring of our youth population.

This is community work at its best, to its best and for its best. Is our youth population, our future, worth the investment of time, labor, money and follow-through? I happen to think it is. What do you think?
