Supreme Court ruling goes against biblical marriage

Editor,

My parents and maternal grandparents, previously residents of Lake County, both celebrated more than sixty years of biblical marriage, a lifelong covenant and sexually exclusive relationship, which produced sons and daughters to sustain humankind and to care for planet earth. God designed marriage to replicate his relationship with those who love and obey his commands, Ephesians 5:21-33.

I was not surprised recently when America’s highest court ruled in favor of non-traditional, non-biblical marriage. While some clergy, political leaders, and those who sit on the benches of our country’s highest courts may change their opinion of marriage as citizens create new models of relationships, those who follow Jesus will continue to obey his clear instruction about marriage as expressed in Matthew 19:4-6.

Since God is Truth and his words are true, the ruling handed down by the Supreme Court changes nothing in regard to the truth about biblical marriage. What has changed is America’s judicial definition of marriage, putting the USA in a position contrary to orthodox biblical instruction which has existed for centuries and continues to be practiced by millions (billions?) of Christians worldwide.

God’s laws were given to instruct us in the ways of righteousness. The new marriage law abdicates its role as a moral instructor, presenting instead a misleading and ill-advised guide to marriage.

As followers of Jesus, we have a golden opportunity to prove to those who disagree with us the validity of God’s instruction about marriage by showing our spouses mutual love and fidelity and by demonstrating biblical marriage to our children. At the same time, let us be kind, gracious and compassionate toward those who disagree or oppose our views of marriage, Jesus died for them too.

Let us pray that all our laws, the policies of our government and the judgments of our courts sustain the freedoms of the past and preserve the right of every American to speak truth with love, Ephesians 4:15-16.
