POLSON – High winds caused white caps Saturday morning that had organizers of the Polson Triathlon worried about swimmer’s safety, but a lull in the weather let swimmers get off to a start that was only mildly choppy, race organizer Matt Seeley said.

Around 125 people from around Mission Valley, Missoula, and afar, participated in the race, which took folks on a course running through Polson and biking north of town.

“It went off really well,” Seeley said. “It calmed down just at the right time. We had a couple that turned around and didn’t make it through the swim, but other than that everything was okay.”

Cool temperatures made the race a little more comfortable for the racers, Seeley said. Seeley thanked the more than 100 volunteers, local law enforcement, city government and local law enforcement that helped make sure the race went off without a hitch.

As a competitor, Seeley took home first place in the race.

“My favorite part of the morning is when I dive off the dock and I can get ready to start my race,” Seeley said, adding that Andrew Drobeck, the second place finisher who has won the triathlon before, was a tough opponent.

In the ladies’ race, Polson’s Ali Bronsdon ended up falling to non-local Amanda Hunter.

A kiddie course was also available so youngsters could try their hand at a mini-triathlon. Taking home top prize in that category were:

boys 8 and under winner Teagu McElwee, girls 8 and under winner Amelia Stene, boys 9 and over winner Owen McElwee and girls 9 and over winner Gwen Seeley.
