FINLEY POINT — A structure fire on North Finley Point Road fully engulfed a cabin and a nearby pump house at about 4:10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, according to Finley Point Fire Chief Rob Morigeau.

The fire was in Ralph Campbell’s lake cabin and two grandchildren were staying in the building. It was a close call for the young men. One woke up and smelled smoke, and they had to run out without their shoes. No one was injured, but the building was a total loss.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.

Morigeau said the cabin was aflame when the Finley Point volunteer firemen arrived. He immediately called for mutual aid and the Polson Fire Department responded. Approximately 12 firefighters were on scene.

Morigeau said he was concerned about the trees and brush surrounding the cabin.

“Embers were flying up, but they went into nearby cherry orchards, which had been irrigated,” Morigeau said.

He said the weather forecast was predicting winds, and he was panicking.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but just as the sun came over the mountain there were 15 to 20 mph north winds.
