Editor,

I agree with Mr. Scott that his letter expresses a conservative approach concerning our country. The problem is there is no factual basis upon which his approach is based. That seems to be a consistent technique.

Research shows his reference is to something originated in 2009, frequently repurposed and provides no information allowing verification. Snopes.com explains why it is false. But the conservative approach isn’t usually concerned with facts.

Similarly, Mr. Cummings uses the same technique to present information as facts. At least he says “from various sources,” implying facts, that show America’s decline. He also implies the blame rests on President Obama. My senile Aunt Helen could easily be one of his “various sources.”

Factual is the progress made by a U.S. Congress controlled by the Republicans, some more conservative than others, working in direct opposition to the ideas of the democratic president.

All the political prose going on now champions what a candidate would do if president, ignoring the fact that the position in our system is only one of the clogs of government, not dictatorial.

For example, often talked about is the war on ISIS. No one has mentioned the fact Congress has avoided declaring war on ISIS thus restricting what military action a president can take. Candidates also neglect to point out Congress has avoided confirming a presidential appointment of someone capable, experienced and unopposed for the position by either side, with the skills to attack ISIS’s availability to funds. Other judicial appointments pending confirmations are being blocked by Congress, disrupting the court system.

The two letters are representative of the conservative approach; the same rhetoric we hear in campaign speeches; opinions poised as facts.

I have no qualms with legitimate political positions or opinions but do wish the conservative views would be expressed with information that is accurate, verifiable and helpful to finding our correct course. It seems the conservative approach remains blame and twist information to its own purpose. And yes, there are liberals who do the same and they are just as unhelpful.
