Editor,

“The Age of Reform” is upon us, like it or not. The evidence is strikingly strong and “in our face.” I refer to America’s politics, of course. Sometimes it takes a death to wake us up. Thank heavens we have the Democratic party to hold things together for a period of time until the GOP revives.

The Mitch McConnell Senate leadership style has been part of the death process. Young Paul Ryan, House Leader, is somewhat of a different mindset, but poor Paulie (we used to call him that) has a “tiger by the tail” at the moment. The Ryan clan of Janesville, Wisconsin has been friends with our family for 60 years. And depending on our family’s various political leanings, the thoughts go out to Paulie from pure sympathy to full support, and on to an understanding compassion. Being somewhat isolated from all this, way out here in “God’s country,” it is fun to watch. But I digress.

Change is often hard and filled with resistance. Political change can be especially difficult. The emergence of the present reform change started about eight years ago when Barack Obama was elected president and the Republican party bosses got together and signed a pact to block everything Obama tried to accomplish legislatively.  And the blocking strategies were many, were clever, and were always available one way or another.

One thing about our so-called democracy, though, is that the “We The People” attitudes and movements are allowed to emerge publicly without authoritative vicious reprisals. Many are saying that our entire nation should give thanks for what the Bernie Sanders campaign has produced in the 40-and-under age groups. These millions, who are our future political, economic, social and international leaders, are speaking loudly and clearly.

Sanders may not win the primary, but we can rest assured both political parties are taking serious note of his vast following and what that following stands for as Americans.

Let’s fasten our seat belts. “The Age of Reform” is here and now.
