RONAN – Staying cool, calm, and collected during a round of golf is the easy part for Ronan Maiden Tania Ulutoa. However, since this is her first year playing, it is the technique that she has been focusing on.

“I played softball last year and I wanted to try something new,” Ulutoa said. “I have really enjoyed doing my own thing when I am walking the course, but I definitely am trying to get better at putting and the basics.”

Ulutoa took the course on April 19 in hopes of breaking her personal best during a dual against Stillwater.

“I’ve been shooting around 103, but my goal this year is to break 100,” Ulutoa said. “I would like to get down in the 90s.”

Ronan’s Assistant Coach Payge Delaurenti is in her first year and has been helping the team with their tee-off.

“I have been trying to fix their swings and certain body movements,” Delaurenti said. “The mechanics of a proper swing are important, especially with different body types.”

One of these players is Junior Chance Beneault, who splits his time between JV and Varsity. Beneault is working on his “chipping and putting,” which will hopefully secure him a permanent spot on the Varsity squad.

“I think I have some things to work on,” Beneault said. “If I continue to practice, I will hopefully get more time playing at the upper level.”

Despite teetering first team and second team, Beneault is just happy to be part of a group.

“I enjoy it because I get to develop a family culture while doing something I love,” Beneault said. “My favorite part of golf is meeting new people and getting to be with friends.”

This could be the first year that the Ronan boys team makes it to State as a full team, according to Delaurenti.

“They have that potential,” Delaurenti said. “It will be fun to watch them succeed as the season progresses.”

The Ronan golf team will travel to Libby on Friday, April 29. Results for the Stillwater Dual are unavailable.
