POLSON – With a limited amount of athletes, Mission Head Coach Trenna Ferris is impressed with the impact her track and field team makes on the tar.

“We have kids that are placing in the top six in almost every event,” Ferris said.

The Mission girls and boys track and field team is made up of roughly 13 athletes, according to Ferris.

“They are learning to think more like a team than as individuals,” she said. “We do not have very many athletes, so it is important that we make an effort to watch every kid’s event.”

Since the team is so small, athletes are having to be open minded about trying new events, according to Ferris. One of these athletes is senior Nick Durglo, who competes in the 100-meter, 200-meter, discus, javelin, and 4x100 relay depending on the meet.

“I just try to do my best to support the team,” Durglo said. “I’m really focusing on being consistent and working hard.”

Durglo finished third in discus and sixth in the 200-meter dash on Tuesday, May 3 at the Lake County Invitational in Polson.

“I am really enjoying the team atmosphere this year,” Durglo said. “We all support one another.”

On of these supportive teammates is senior Tate Weingart, who placed sixth in the triple jump and seventh in the 1600-meter run.

“We know each other and cheer people on a little bit more with a small team,” Weingart said. “We are almost like a big family.”

All athletes have been improving and making huge strides, according to Ferris. Practice is where Weingart is focusing on making leaps and bounds.

“In triple jump, form is really important,” Weingart said. “We do technique work and also focus on endurance for my mile run.”

Other strong athletes for the Mission track and field team are Sydney Castor and Afton Brander. Castor placed third in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump. Brander took first place in the high jump and fourth in the triple jump.

“I have so many great athletes,” Ferris said. “It will be fun to see how they finish this year.”

With the end of their season in sight, Durglo is kicking his training into the next gear.

“No days off,” he said. “It is important to be taking care of your body at the end of the season.”

Mission will travel to Districts on Friday, May 13 for a two-day competition in hopes of qualifying for Divisionals.
