Salish Kootenai College held a two-day celebration for this year’s college graduates on Friday and Saturday in the Joe McDonald event center.
After a round of old-style all around traditional women’s dancing at the annual Graduation Powwow, SKC Board Chairman Jim Durglo explained to the crowd that the board consists of seven community members appointed by the tribal council.
“We are a group of folks that help the president achieve the mission of the college,” he said.
The event was a time to recognize the value of a tribal education, according to Durglo.
“I think Salish Kootenai College is the best tribal college in the nation,” he said.
It was also a time to honor President Sandra Boham for her first year as president at the college. The board presented Boham with a blanket combining her name with the names of past presidents.
“We will move this college forward and continue to be an excellent place for education,” she said after handing out gifts of appreciation to the crowd.
Cultural leader Tony Incashola spoke about the importance of supporting people through their education to help create future leaders.
