Polson soccer finds success

GREAT FALLS — The Polson FC U14 girl’s soccer team traveled to Great Falls June 10-12 for the 2016 State Cup tournament. Playing in the Bronze Cup division, their first game on Friday, June 10 was against Big Sky. Polson defeated their opponent 6-0. Maggie Todd led the team getting three goals for the hat trick. Other scorers were Autumn Burland, Ali Hupka and Ellie Maddy. Megan Rost got the complete game shutout at keeper, the Polson defense only allowed Rost to touch the ball only twice the entire game. Nayeli Windauer, Aisha Clarke, Chloe Matt, Lilly Armstrong and Josie Salois all played solid team defense to defend their goal. The following day, Polson took on Stevensville. Polson came out strong and scored a goal in the first minute of play and didn’t look back from there, winning the game 5-0. Todd got her second hat trick of the weekend with another three goals. Maddy and Sophia Moderia combined for two. Rost tallied her second complete game shutout of the tournament. Polson earned the number-one seed going into the Championship on Sunday, June 12 against Flathead Force. Flathead scored first, in the 22nd minute, but Maggie Todd answered with a goal 5 minutes later, to tie the game at 1-1. Those happened to be the only two goals of the game. Tied at 1-1, the game went into penalty kicks to decide the champion. Polson won the shootout 3-2. Rost blocked two of the Flathead shots to take the title of Bronze Division Champions. Of the 12 goals that Polson scored over the weekend, Todd scored seven to lead the team. Tia Mercer led the team with four assists. Jazlyn Dalby, Reagan McDermott and Kyla Heiser all contributed to the team effort and had great games playing in wing and attacking positions.
