News from Lake County Sheriff ’s Office

ST. IGNATIUS — Through a court order, on July 8 Lake County Detention Officers transported inmate Michael Assiniboine, Jr. to his father’s funeral in St. Ignatius. When the services concluded at about 1:30 p.m. officers began a patdown procedure and noticed Assiniboine had something in his handcuffed hand. He struggled with officers as he refused to let it go, eventually stuffing the object in his mouth. A taser was deployed on Assiniboine multiple times, and as officers struggled, he bit the hand of one of the officers. They were able to keep Assiniboine from swallowing the object, which was later discovered to be a condom containing suspected heroin, drug paraphernalia and money.

Through the duration of the transport, Assiniboine was dressed in an orange Lake County Detention jumpsuit, handcuffed with a belly-chain and ankle handcuffs to prevent escape. He was never allowed outside the reach of officers; however, he was allowed to hug family members upon his departure.

As a result, Assiniboine has been charged with felony possession of dangerous drugs, assault on a peace officer and resisting arrest. Original charges for his incarceration are two counts of burglary, theft, felony possession of dangerous drugs, resisting arrest, bail jumping and criminal contempt.
