RONAN — The Ronan Chiefs have every reason to be excited about the 2016 football season, despite showing a 2-6 record at the end of last year.

“We had a strong summer in the weight room and that has led to some good team unity,” Head Coach Matt Detwiler said. “We have been putting in the work and I am excited for games to start.”

After two years as an assistant coach, Detwiler is finally getting his chance athead coach. He is hoping to incorporate his own style of coaching, along with the fundamentals he learned while playing as a Ronan Chief.

“It is exciting,” Detwiler said. “I graduated from Ronan, so I get to use some of the things the program used to be like and bring in my own ideas to mold the program.”

Although the team lost a majority of their games last year, Detwiler said the Chiefs were always in the mix.

“We are a strong team, but need to finish stronger,” Detwiler said. “A majority of the games we lost last year were just in the last few minutes.” The Chiefs are finished with their two-a-day workout schedule and are looking forward to the rest of their season.

“It has been hot and it has been a grind,” Detwiler said.

“Two-a-days are not meant to be fun. I told the kids that they are meant to get you in shape and prevent injury, so we can have a healthy team.”
