Editor,

A lonely man traveling north on U.S. Highway 93 wandered into church about noon on a recent Sunday looking for a place to rest. It didn’t appear that he had come to join us in worship, rather he came to get relief from ankle pain and to find a little comfort. I didn’t see him until I left the worship center, he was sitting alone in the fellowship room. It appeared that others had seen him but were apprehensive about getting involved in whatever he needed. I also hesitated. As I took a chair beside him, it appeared to me that he had been traveling for some time. I offered him some cookies, it was the only food in the church kitchen. I inquired about his family, destination and asked how I might help him. He told me that he had left his pack near Jette store and wondered if someone would give him a lift in that direction. His jeans and shirt needed a laundry and I hesitated to have him get into our new car, thinking he might soil the seat.

After we had dropped him off at the store and returned the mile to our home, I thought I should have done more to help him, at least offered to buy something for his lunch. I put a few things into a paper bag and returned to the where we had left him, but he was gone.

I’m reminded of a song that Tennessee Ernie Ford recorded quite a few years ago:

“Lord help me live from day to day in such a self-forgetful way,

That even when I kneel to pray, my prayer shall be for others.

Others, Lord, yes others. Let this my motto be;

Help me to live for others, that I may live like Thee.”

There is a line in God’s Book: “… whenever we have opportunity, we should do good to everyone.” Galatians 6:10.
