POLSON — The Lady Pirates battled Saturday through a penalty kick shootout to continue their postseason, but a final kick from the opponent ended their season with a 6-5 loss to Billings Central.
The Rams scored twice in the first 10 minutes, which “made it appear it was going to be a very long game,” coach Michael Hewston said, but “the girls didn’t let down and after some impressive attacks scored two in the last 10 minutes of the first half.”
At 15 minutes into the second half, Polson scored first before Billings Central answered with another goal 15 minutes later.
Tied at 3 with goals scored from Lady Pirates Ashley Howell, Tiara Duford and Janessa Taylor, the ladies went through two overtimes without a score. The teams faced direct kicks from the mark. After each team matching two scores apiece, BC scored the final shot for win.
Despite the loss, Coach Hewston was proud of his squad.
“It was the most valiant effort I have seen in 15 years of coaching soccer,” Hewston said.
Polson finished with a record of 10-3-1.
