A 54-year-old Pablo woman has been charged in the death of her 2-year-old grandson.

Lorraine Ramirez was charged with vehicular homicide while under the influence and is being held on a $125,000 bond in the Beaverhead County Jail following a one-vehicle crash that took the life of Bakersfield, California, resident Raymond Amaya.

The crash occurred in Dillon at about 12:17 a.m. on Aug. 1, according to a Montana Highway Patrol supervisor.

Ramirez was driving a blue 2003 Volkswagen Beetle that crashed into a corral fence and flipped onto the driver’s side. Amaya, who was the only one of four occupants not wearing a seatbelt, was in the right rear of the vehicle and was partially ejected, according to MHP. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other Bakersfield residents in the vehicle – a 30-year-old woman and a 3-year-old girl – were transported to Barrett Hospital in Dillon along with Ramirez.

Armstrong said Ramirez thought she was on an I-15 on-ramp but was instead on the South Atlantic/I-15 Business Loop that is a dead end.

Beaverhead County Attorney Jed Fitch said methamphetamine and marijuana were found in Ramirez’s blood.

Ramirez said she was headed from Polson to California, according to MHP Trooper Barbara Armstrong.
