FORSYTH – The Charlo Vikings lost 50-32 on the road to the Forsyth Dogies in a Class C 8-Man quarter final playoff match up on Saturday afternoon.

Charlo, last season’s state runner-up, went into the game with ten consecutive state playoff appearances on its resume, while the Forsyth Dogies are competing in their debut 8-Man season.

The Dogies scored on their first and third possessions of the game to take an early 14-0 lead over the Vikings.

After going three and out on their first two possessions, the Vikings finally put points on the board with a 48-yard touchdown scurry by Landers Smith.

On the second play of the second quarter, Smith once again found the end zone on a small two-yard jaunt to cut the Dogies lead to 14-12.

Two possessions later, Forsyth marched down the field in eight plays to push their lead to 22-12 over the Vikings.

But it was short-lived.

Once again, Smith found the end zone on a long 48-yard run to cut the Dogies’ lead back to just two points, 22-20.

With less than a minute left in the half, the Vikings took the lead 26-22 on a 60-yard scamper by Smith.

The Dogies were forced to punt on their final possession of the second quarter giving the ball back to the Vikings with 2.6 seconds left in the half.  Quarterback Smith connected with Toby Odom for a long 31-yard touchdown pass to give the Vikings 32-22 half-time lead.

Unfortunately, that was as far as Charlo got, as the second half belonged totally to Forsyth. The Dogies offense scored 28 unanswered points, while the defense stymied the Vikings’ offense.

“In the second half we just could not quite get going again,” Vikings head coach Mike Krahn said. “We had some costly penalties and breakdowns in execution that Forsyth was able to capitalize on.”

Smith finished the day passing for one touchdown and rushing for another four on 22 carries gaining 270 yards.

With the loss, the Vikings finish the season 9-2. “I was very proud of our boys for battling until the very end and leaving it all on the field,” Krahn said.  “We fell short of our ultimate goal of playing for a state championship, but we overcame much adversity and played with pride and conviction each week.”

Meanwhile, the Dogies will advance into the semifinals hosting defending state champion Ennis on Saturday.
