RONAN – The Polson Lady Pirates softball team knocked off its cross-valley and Northwest A conference rival Ronan Maidens 11-10 in an epic extra inning battle on Tuesday, April 17.

The visiting Lady Pirates were able to set the tone early scoring a run in the first, two in the second and three in the third inning to take an early 6-0 lead over the Maidens.

Ronan’s hitters responded in the bottom of the third inning and pushed across five runs closing the six-run Polson lead to only one, 6-5.

Both teams' pitching held strong in the fourth inning and the score remained 6-5 Polson.

The Lady Pirates were able to score three more runs in the fifth, but the Maidens kept pace with three runs of their own.

Once again, the pitchers for both teams held strong in the sixth inning and the score continued to be in Polson’s favor 9-8.

Polson took a 10-8 two run lead in the top of the seventh, when Quinn Motichka scored on an Olivia Perez sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, with a Maiden runner on base, Gabby Wirz belted a towering two-run shot that carried over the fence and sent the game into extra innings.

The Lady Pirates in the top of the ninth took the lead 11-10 and the victory when Josie Caye scored on a Kaylanna DesJarlais single.

Despite the disappointment of the loss, Maiden head coach Kellie Manyhides said she was very pleased with how her girls played. “They played hard and were very mentally tough,” said Manyhides. “We had a really rough warm-up, but I was excited to see once the game started that we played our game.”

Madison Clairmont led the Maidens with a four-hit three RBI performance, while Wirz, Emilie Corley and Courtney Clairmont each drove in two runs apiece.

“Madison Clairmont hit very well for us,” coach Manyhides said. “She was a great hitter for us as a freshman last year, and it was nice to see her bat come along.”

Vanessa Kent notched four strike outs and the win in the circle for the Lady Pirates.

At the plate, Paige Noyes led the Lady Pirates with 4 hits and three RBIs and Desjarlais followed closely behind with three hits and a RBI.

Polson will host Ronan on Tuesday night, May 15 with game time set for 7 p.m.
