ARLEE – The first Junkin’ the Jocko was held on Saturday in an effort to raise money for kids and get more people to stop and shop in Arlee, and organizers are hoping to hold a similar event on the Fourth of July.

During the event, the Jocko Valley Show and Shine featured about two-dozen classic cars outside the Brown Building. People looked at gleaming hubcaps, perfect paint, and pristine interior and voted for their favorites. Robin and Mitzi Miland won the People’s Choice award with their 1972 Dodge Charger. David Burland had the best paint with a 1959 Chevy pickup, and Ron Couture drove in with a 1936 Pontiac Silver Streak and won best interior.

Proceeds from entry fees went to the Arlee Youth Connection program. Their mission is to cultivate physical and mental health for youth in the community by providing drug and alcohol free activities. “We’ve had a lot of community support for this project so far,” said Makenzie Felsman, one of the three organizers. Several groups including the Your Life Matters suicide prevention program have donated to help develop the group’s youth activities.

Along with the car show, venders were set up outside The Merc with everything from vintage to handmade items. Joni Cainan, organizer, said it’s important to bring people to town to support small businesses and help the town thrive. Information about the next event will be posted on The Merc’s Facebook page.
