Softball

GREAT FALLS – The Purple Wave 12U girls softball team turned a five-game win streak into a spot in the championship game during the Montana USA Junior Olympic State Tournament in Great Falls this past weekend.  

In 12U bracket play on Friday, the Purple Wave opened with a 10-3 win over Montana Avalanche-Sammoury and a 10-7 victory over Emeralds -Allen. On Saturday, the Wave defeated Montana Warriors-Black 16-3 and Mining City Magic-Stewart 7-6. The Wave won their first game on Sunday 10-7 over the Montana Avalanche – Gagner, however fell 19-2 to 406 Play Makers. This set up a championship match against 406 Play Makers who went on to defeat the Purple Wave 12-3.

Also competing in the 12U division of the tournament were the Mighty Maidens. Friday, the Maidens stubbled in the first game and fell 11-2 to the Bitterroot Sparks-Dywick. On Saturday, the Maidens won their first two games 14-10 over Belgrade-Green and 17-3 against Bitterroot Sparks-Berning. Montana Avalanche-Hanninen ended the Mighty Maidens’ championship dreams with a 20-3 victory in the late Saturday game.

In 10U action, the Lil Lakers compiled a 4-2 record placing third in the tournament. The Lil Lakers shut out Great Falls Selects-Marr 15-0 on Friday. They split their games on Saturday falling 10-6 against Belgrade-Green and defeated Aftershock 13-1. On Sunday, the Lil Lakers won their first two games 13-1 over Bozeman Stealer-Emmert and 6-5 against Laurel Freedom. However, in the semifinal game Belgrade-Green narrowly slipped past the Lil Lakers 12-11.

The 18U Purple Rain finished the tournament with an overall record of 2-2, while the 18U Mission Valley Insanity and 14U Lakers finished with 0-2 records.

 

Baseball

The Mission Valley Mariners had a strong outing during the three-day John R. Harp Memorial Tournament at Griffin Field in Kalispell. On Friday, the Mariners handily defeated Fort Macleod Royals 20-1. The Mariners won back-to-back games 13-6 over Medicine Hat Knights and 12-8 over host Kalispell Lakers A on Saturday. In Sunday’s game, the Mariners struggled in the early innings against Vauxhaull Spurs and fell 15-5. The team’s next game with be at home July 11 as they host the Bitterroot Red Sox.
