Polson and Ronan split in post-holiday rivalry matchup
PABLO – The Polson Pirates and Lady Pirates basketball players returned to the court after the Christmas holidays to host the Ronan Chiefs and Maidens. The Lady Pirates fell in the opener, 57-27. The boys earned a 60-47 win.
The Maidens got off to a fast start with a 19-point first quarter and held the Lady Pirates at seven points. In the second quarter, the Maiden defense held the Lady Pirates offense to two points while scoring 25 points to take a 44-9 lead into the locker room at the half. The Maidens maintained their momentum in the third quarter and outscored the Lady Pirates 10-6 to finish the third quarter with a 54-15 lead.
With a running clock, the Lady Pirates made a last gasp at staying in the game by outscoring the Maidens 12-3.
The 57-27 win gave the Maidens their second on the season. The Lady Pirates have yet to notch a win.
Kieauna DeRoche scored a game-high 18 points for the Maidens, and Jaylea Lunceford chipped in with 10 points.
For Polson, Mahala Buffalo and Karly Lawson each paced the Lady Pirates with 10 points.
For the boys, both Pirates and Chiefs came into the game with one win each. Robin Erickson and Bo Kelley both helped set the tone on offense for Polson as the Pirates raced to a 20-9 first quarter lead.
At the second quarter buzzer, Ronan Chief Antony Camel made a three-point shot to keep the Pirates’ lead to just eight points. At the half, the Pirates were up 30-22. Polson kept the lead 46-32 at the end of the third quarter.
The Chiefs put together a small scoring run in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough to take the momentum away from the Pirates as they prevailed 60-47.
For the Chiefs, Bubba Bush scored a team-high 13 points, and Anthony Camel followed up with 11 points.
Robin Erickson shot a game-high 16 points to pace the Pirates. Bo Kelley finished with 15 points, and Trevor Schultz netted 10 points.
