Sports shorts for April 24, 2019

Tennis

Ronan Chiefs

On Thursday, the Ronan boys tennis team picked up a 5-2 win over Libby, while the girls struggled against the Lady Loggers falling 6-1. Earlier in the week, the teams fell to Corvallis; boys 7-5 and girls 7-1.

Mission Bulldogs

Maria Bugeda, Pam Frost and doubles partners Arleta Long and Allyson Umphrey all won matches on Friday for the Mission Lady Bulldogs against Clark Fork. Mission and Clark Fork finished in a 3-3 tie.

On Saturday, the Lady Bulldog lost 4-0 and the Bulldogs 2-0 as Darby swept Mission on the road in both singles and doubles action.

Polson Pirates

In both boys and girls tennis action on Friday, Polson swept Stevensville. The Pirates defeated the Yellow Jackets 7-0. The Lady Pirates narrowly slipped past the Lady Yellow Jackets 4-3.

 

Softball

MAC

Mission-Arlee-Charlo (MAC) scored a combined 26 runs on 20 hits taking both ends of the home doubleheader against Thompson Falls on Monday afternoon, April 15. MAC rolled to a 14-3 victory in the first game before running away with a 12-0 shutout win in the second game. Pitcher Tomi Brazill tallied wins in both games.

MAC batter Frankie Smith led at the plate with a combined six hits, seven RBIs, a double and a home run. On Thursday, Florence defeated MAC 14-5. MAC batters scored five runs on three hits in the first two innings. Rebounding from the Florence loss, MAC won both games of a double header against Troy on Friday to cap off three games. 

MAC batters blasted Troy 18-6 and 26-8. In the first game, Courtney Mitchell led at the plate with a double, home run and five RBIs; while in the second game, Azia Umphrey blasted two home runs and a triple for four RBIs. Smith and Brazill each had a home run and two RBIs.  

Polson Lady Pirates

The Lady Pirates scored four runs on nine hits in a 6-4 Northwest Class A loss to the visiting Columbia Falls Wildkat on Thursday evening.

Polson pitcher Lauren Vergeront struck out seven, gave up 11 hits and walked two, while Kaylanna DesJarlais led the Lady Pirates at the plate with three hits and two RBIs.

Ronan Maidens

The Ronan Maidens booked their first win of the season by defeating hosting Corvallis 12-5 at the Grizzly Softball Field in Missoula on Wednesday evening. The Maidens jumped to a 6-1 lead in the first inning and ended up scoring 12 runs on 16 hits. Maiden pitcher Macao Jackson was four-for-five at the plate with two RBIs and in the pitching circle. Jackson struck out six and gave up eight hits in seven innings of work. In Northwest A softball action in Libby, Maiden Emilie Corley in the fourth inning belted a home run for Ronan’s only run of the game in a 9-1 loss on Saturday.

 

Track and Field

Big Sky/Deer Lodge/Seeley Swan/Arlee

The Arlee boys and girls track and field teams grabbed 12 top-five finishes during a four-team meet against Big Sky, Deer Lodge and Seeley Swan on Tuesday, April 16, at the MCPS Stadium in Missoula. 

Peyton Lammerding won the shot put with a throw of 35-feet and placed second in the discus. Halle Adams nabbed fourth in the shot put.

For the Arlee boys, Isaac Fisher picked up three fourth-place finishes in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Claiming second place finishes for Arlee were Sage Nicolai in the 3200 and Garrett Stringer in the long jump. Finishing in fifth were Eduardo Santiago in the 110-meter hurdles, Levi Fullerton in the javelin and Jason Miller in the triple jump. 

Thompson Falls Invite

Also on Tuesday, both the Charlo boys and girls’ track teams placed second with team points. The Mission girls’ placed fourth during the Thompson Falls Invite. 

For the boys, Mission Bulldog Isaiah Nasateweya finished first in the 400, posting a time of 59.17, while Charlo Viking Wills Degrandpre finished first in the 1600 and second in the 800. The Charlo boys raced to a first-place finish in the 4x400 relay and a third in the 4x100 relay. Finishing first, second and third in the pole vault were Vikings Landers Smith, Garett Vaughan and Ethan Diaz. 

On the girls’ side of the track, grabbing first place finishes for the Lady Vikings where Carlee Fryberger in the 100-meters, Allie Delaney in the 400-meters and 300-meter hurdles and Kaitlin Cox in both the long jump and triple jump. The Charlo girls also won the 4x100 and 4x400 relay. 

For the Mission Lady Bulldogs, Karolyna Buck placed first in the 800-meters with a time of 2:43.17 and the 3200 with a time of 13:15.59.

Sapphire Twilight Invitational 

At the Sapphire Twilight Invitational in Corvallis on Thursday, Polson Lady Pirate Bea Frissell won both the 800 with a time of 2:27.57 and 1600 with a time of 5:16.45. 

Colby Soderquist won the pole vault with 13-feet even for the Pirates. Lady Pirate Mikaela Ducharme posted a jump of 33-feet-and-10 in the triple jump for the win.

Seeley Swan Invitational

On Saturday, during the Seeley Swan Invitational at the MCPS Stadium in Missoula both the Ronan boys and girls’ track squad placed fourth in the overall team standings. The Mission Bulldogs placed fifth in the overall girls’ team standings.  

Ronan Maiden Kinsley Barney raced to a 13.31 first place finish in the 100 meters and a first place 200 meters with a time of 27.38 seconds.

James Normandeau raced to a 1600-meter win with a time of 4:44.35 for the Chiefs. Sydney Brander completed a jump of 16-feet-and-one-inch in the long jump and 33-feet-4.5-inches in the triple jump, both marks were good for first place.
