POLSON – The Polson Lady Pirates and the Ronan Maidens battled under the lights in a Northwest Class A conference girls softball matchup Tuesday night.

The April 16th game saw the hosting Lady Pirates earn their third win of the season and second in conference play as they prevailed over the Maidens 6-2.

“I thought the girls played very well,” said first-year Lady Pirate skipper Jami Hanson. “I felt we were aggressive at the plate against a quality pitcher and opponent.”

The Maidens scored in the top of the first inning when Ronan senior Emilie Corley snuck a line-drive single past second base to push leadoff batter Madison Clairmont home. Clairmont had reached the base on a double.

The one-run lead was short-lived for the Maidens as Polson’s leadoff hitter Josie Caye got things going for the Lady Pirates by belting a line drive shot into right field for a triple. On the next play, Caye crossed the plate tying the game 1-1 on a Kaylanna DesJarlais single into right field. Two plays later, DesJarlais scored the second run of the inning on a Lexi Orien single.

In the second inning, the Lady Pirates wasted little time adding to their lead as they tacked on two more runs as Caye blasted a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left center for a two-run home run to take a 4-1 lead. The Lady Pirates added two more runs in the fifth inning to boost their advantage to 6-1.

Ronan attempted to mount a two-out comeback in the top half of the sixth inning; however, after scoring one run off a Rhylie Big Beaver single the Maidens, unfortunately, were unable to cut further into Polson’s lead and left two runners marooned on the bases. “We started the game off strong with some great hits. But in the end, we left runners on base a few too many times,” said Ronan Maiden head coach Kaylee Cheff.

Polson senior pitcher Lauren Vergeront picked up the win scattering seven hits, walking none and striking out ten in her 85-pitch complete-game performance in the circle. Vergeront had a single and an RBI in the three times she was at bat. “Lauren threw a great game for us,” said Hanson.

For the Maidens, Macao Jackson fanned three, walked two and allowed nine hits in six innings of work. Jackson also had a solid night at the plate going two-for-three. Corley paced the Maiden batters going two-for-three with a double and an RBI. Caye went two-for-three with a triple, home run and two RBIs for the Lady Pirates, while teammates Orien and Paige Noyes both had two hits and a double. Ronan is scheduled to host Polson Tuesday, May 14, in a 5 p.m. contest.

“I think it is going to be a really exciting game next time we face up with Polson,” Cheff said.
