PHS seniors, alums awarded $38,750 in scholarships

Polson Scholarship and Education Foundation awarded 29 scholarships totaling $38,750 to Polson High School seniors and former Polson High School graduates who are currently attending an accredited 2-year, 4-year, community college, university or vocational school.

The following scholarships are set up through the PSEF with money donated by individuals in memory of loved ones, alumni classes, civic organizations and employees of School District No. 23 in the amount of $500. PSEF matches the $500 donation with $500 so each high school senior receives a $1,000 scholarship. One exception was the Alumni Class of ‘59, which provided two $1,000 scholarships, and PSEF provided $500 for each so the students received a $1500 scholarship. The students receiving the Alumni Class of ’59 scholarships were Andrey Bauer and Summer Johnston. 

Additional high school seniors receiving $1,000 scholarships are Savanna Houle, who received the Mildred and Hib Hanson Memorial Scholarship, and Shawntaya Burland, who received the Montecahto Club Scholarship. The children of Maureen and Ray Theiler provided money for two Theiler/Oberlitner Scholarships in the amount of $750 and PSEF provided funds to bring the amount up to $1,000 for each of the two scholarships. Students receiving these scholarships are Keyan Dalbey and Olivia Perez. Other individuals or organizations that provided $500 scholarships which are matched by funds from PSEF and the students receiving these scholarships are: Shea McGuinness - the Travis Dolphin Memorial Scholarship, Lisa Costilla and Karlina Lawson - District No. 23 Employees Scholarships, Kyla Blixt - the Chris Hoyt Memorial Scholarship, Natasha Gravelle - the J.V. Holman Memorial Scholarship and Mikaela DuCharme - the Polson Beta Scholarship. Robin Erickson and Kaylanna DesJarlais each received the Jessie Clemans Memorial Scholarship. Mr. Clemans provided these two $1,000 scholarships with no match from PSEF. 

The following $1,500 - $2,000 scholarships for students currently enrolled in college were provided. Natalie Wheeler was awarded $1,000 from The Women of Rollins Emma Sager Scholarship and $1,000 from PSEF. The Theiler/Oberlitner Scholarship provided two $750 scholarships with matching funds to provide the scholarships from PSEF. Students receiving the Theiler/Oberlitner Scholarships are Jayme Sheumaker and Grace Sievert. The Chris Hoyt Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Lydia Dupuis. Brenna McGuinness received a combination of scholarships from the Alumni Class of ’65 Scholarship, the Merle Anderson Memorial Scholarship, the Robert DePoe III Memorial Scholarship and the Theiler/Oberlitner Scholarship for a total of $1,750. Wit Sampson was also awarded the Theiler/Oberlitner Scholarship for $750 with a match from PSEF of $750 for a total of $1,500. Mollie Lemm received the Sue Gregg Lanier Scholarship, $500, and an additional $1,500 from PSEF. Chadelle Smith received a $1,500 scholarship from School District No. 23 Employees and PSEF. Laurel Bitterman received the $1,500 scholarship from the Mildred and Hib Hanson Memorial Scholarship. Jake Finkbeiner was awarded the Trusler Family Vocational Scholarship in the amount of $2,000. The new $2,000 scholarship, $1,000 provided by Mr. Clemans and $1,000 match from PSEF the Jessie Clemans Memorial scholarship was awarded to Sara Cox.  

Thanks to donations from sponsors for the Lake City Open Golf Tournament that is held in conjunction with Polson Bay Golf Course and PSEF and donations from individuals the following college students received scholarships: Payton Dupuis $1,500 and Heidi Bowman $2,000.

Polson Scholarship and Education Foundation is a local non-profit organization established in 2002 as Polson Dollars for Scholars. The purpose of the organization is to expand access to post-secondary educational opportunities for Polson High School graduates and assist parents and students with college expenses. Since its inception we have provided more than 300 PHS students with $312,000 worth of scholarships. Tax-deductible donations, individuals leaving money in their wills, and fundraisers provide the funds for scholarships as well as individuals setting up a scholarship fund in memory of a loved one. All donations and monies raised goes towards scholarships.
