Art fills courthouse lawn during Sandpiper Art Festival

POLSON – Last Saturday marked the 48th year the Sandpiper Art Festival transformed the quiet oasis of shade trees and open space of the Lake County Courthouse lawn into a one-day bustling marketplace for original fine art and hand-made crafts.
Polson artisan Kristy Humble joined more than 40 artist and crafters who participated in this year’s festival, hosted by the Sandpiper Art Gallery. “I’m stepping out of my comfort zone a bit,” she said about sharing her colorful button artwork with the world.
Humble uses buttons for more than simply fastening her jacket. The artist recognizes their creative potential and utilizes the multi-sized fasteners as her medium of choice. Wanting her art to stand out and be unique, Humble decided to give buttons a try as an art form more than a dozen years ago.
With a keen eye for color, composition and drawing, Humble constructs her charming creations one button at a time. She mixed shapes, sizes, textures and a variety of different tones, resulting in a feast for the eyes.
Along with the button art, Humble reclaims and repurposes wine bottle corks for a diverse selection of hand-made crafts. “Honestly, I will glue corks on anything I can glue stuff on,” she said, chuckling.
Walking along the shaded aisles, spectators had a chance to view original art and hand-made crafts by highly successful and skilled artists as well as the works of new and emerging local artists and artisans ranging from sculptures, woodworking, photography, blown glass, pottery, jewelry, fashion accessories and paintings in both oil and watercolor. The juried festival also featured live music performances.
