Lady Vikings finish sixth at state

BOZEMAN – In their first appearance in the state girls volleyball tournament since 2006, the Charlo Lady Vikings run at the Class C state title came to an end on Friday evening in the consolation brackets.

Playing on the campus of the Montana State University at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse in Bozeman, the Lady Vikings opened first-round action of the tournament with a loss in four sets with the Fort Benton Lady Longhorns. 

After falling 30-28 to Fort Benton in a marathon first set, the Lady Vikings stormed back to take the second set 25-22. The Lady Longhorns took the next two sets 25-17 and 27-25, bumping the Lady Vikings into the win or go home side of the tournament brackets. 

Friday morning, Charlo kept their state title aspirations alive with a 25-20, 25-15, 25-18 three-straight-set sweep of Westby-Grenora. Liev Smith paced the Lady Vikings with 11 digs, nine kills, two aces and a block. Destiny Manuel had 21 digs, and Kassidi Cox added 20 assists along with a block. Lady Viking Bella Hawk had two aces and eight kills, and Kira McPhail chipped in with six kills and two blocks. Carlee Fryberger had 15 kills and three blocks, while sister Conner Fryberger contributed with 15 assists and three blocks. 

With state title dreams hanging in the balance, Charlo faced the Plentywood Lady Wildcats late Friday afternoon. The Lady Vikings stuck with the Lady Wildcats throughout  the first set, but Plentywood ultimately prevailed 25-20. In the second set, the Lady Vikings rebounded winning the set 25-19 and took the third set, 25-23. The Lady Vikings struggled in the fourth set, and Plentywood won 25-19, sending the match into a tie-breaking fifth set. 

In the decisive fifth set, Plentywood prevailed 15-8 ending Charlo’s tournament run. Cox (16) and Carlee Fryberger (16) both combined for 32 of the 36 Lady Vikings total team assists. Carlee Fryberger led Charlo with three aces, while Manuel had 35 digs, McPhail added five blocks, Carlee Fryberger floored 15 kills and Smith posted two aces.

The Charlo Lady Vikings and second-year coach Rhondell Volinkaty wrapped up the 2019 season with an overall record of 24-6, a 14C District Championship, a Western C Divisional runners-up trophy and a sixth-place finish at the Class C state tournament.
