RONAN – Ronan High School honored the class of 2020 with a traditional in-person graduation ceremony on the football field with a few differences due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The graduates and staff were spread out across the field, spaced six feet apart. Yellow caution-tape marked off where family members could sit in the home bleachers. In a show of support, the scoreboard clock was lit to read 20:20. A few students also chose to wear masks.

Buckshot Drum opened the ceremony with an honor song, and the members of the RHS choir shared a virtual performance of the national anthem.

Co-salutatorians Madison Sevier and Brooklyn Kenelty and valedictorian James Normandeau addressed their fellow graduates with prerecorded messages that were shared on a jumbotron screen in the middle of the football field.

“We, the class of 2020, are the sum of the obstacles we have overcome,” Normandeau said to the class. “For that reason, we’re unique. We’re no ordinary class.”

Car horns honked and congratulatory cheers and applause could be heard from dozens of well-wishers listening to the ceremony from outside the football stadium fence.

Ronan High School principal Kevin Kenelty closed the ceremony with these words of advice: “Always act with love and compassion. Life is better lived for others. Live in the moment, put the phone down. We have the potential to do great things regardless of our age.”
