News from the Polson Police Department Sergeant George Simpson

POLSON – On Aug. 7, during the dayshift, the Polson Police Department responded to two significant crashes on U.S. Highway 93 and one significant medical emergency incident.

The unselfish acts of kindness and good old-fashioned Montana initiative displayed by citizens of Polson were nothing short of extraordinary. This comes as no surprise for those of us who live here, but for our guests, be advised: Polson is the greatest community around.

The first crash involved a truck and motorcycle on U.S. Highway 93 with injuries. While the 911 calls were coming into dispatch, people were already assisting the injured and providing traffic control. If helping a stranger with injuries is not nerve-racking enough, directing backed-up summer traffic on the highway is, and yet, these folks jumped right in there until emergency crews could arrive.

Next was a significant medical emergency and a retired nurse jumped right in to assist officers tending the patient, another example of putting the needs of others before one’s own, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After that, there was another crash on U.S. Highway 93 with injuries. Two Army veterans took the initiative and began traffic control and tending the injured before emergency crews arrived and took control of the scene.

It is important that we take notice, genuinely thank one another, and highlight these displays of unsung heroic acts. When tragedy strikes, your community is here. Partnerships such as these make Polson a safe and pleasant place to live, work, learn and play.
